The Foundations
Equal Start was born out of Founder, Shaun Buchanan's lived experience of parental alienation within the justice and educational system. Instead of focusing on his individual experience, Shaun began to recognise that so many communities remain unheard, underserved, and disconnected from mainstream support systems. Equal Start exists to bridge that gap by building trust, improving engagement, and empowering people to access the support they need with dignity and confidence.
Equal Start CIC
Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities, Creating Equal Opportunities
Equal Start CIC is a community-focused organisation committed to improving outcomes for children, young people, adults, and families who face barriers to accessing support, opportunities, and services.
We work alongside local authorities, schools, community organisations, and statutory partners to deliver inclusive, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive support for vulnerable and underrepresented communities.
Our work focuses on supporting individuals and families experiencing:
-
Social exclusion and isolation
-
Domestic abuse and family breakdown
-
Mental health challenges
-
Discrimination and inequality
-
Barriers to education, employment, and training
-
Difficulties accessing statutory services
-
Advocacy and mediation needs
We provide holistic, person-centred support services designed to strengthen resilience, improve wellbeing, and reduce inequalities.
Our Approach
At Equal Start, we believe sustainable change happens when services are built around people, relationships, and lived experience.
Our approach is:
-
Trauma-informed
-
Strengths-based
